There is now a French/Japanese dictionary available on the download page. It consists of the 15000 or so entries in JMDict which have French language glosses.

The dictionary does not yet have markers for parts of speech (noun, adjective, etc.). These will be added in an upcoming version.

The edict_fr.dic file was made by exporting the entries of JMDict with French glosses to EDICT format, and then using WaKan's built-in importer of EDICT-formatted files to create the WaKan-formatted .dic file.

If you find errors in this file, please notify me (tony) via PM or e-mail.

P.S.: If barbiche would be so kind as to translate this posting into French, it might be helpful to other French speakers.

[Note from Barbiche : Don't forget to thanks Tony-san for his work which will allow those who don't speak english well to enjoy Wakan better ! Thanks Tony-san]

Could it be possible to use the following dictionary :
http://www.dictionnaire-japonais.com/

The admin is willing to share the words database and has already make some exports for people asking for it. So it could be great to use it into Wakan!

Aurélien.
Here is the link to the database exports but not "up to date":
http://gcworld.xooit.fr/t10-Base-de-donnees-aux-formats-NFJ-EDICT-IME-XML.htm

I'm going to ask an update Wink

Aurélien、

I have imported the version of the dictionary you gave a link to, after converting it to 16-bit Unicode. The imported file reports containing 22,961 entries. It appears to work, but shows repeated warning messages about some encoding issue. This may take some time to resolve. I would rather put in the work on this when the updated version of the file is available. Please contact me then, at

tonygh@verizon.net

I can post this version on the download page if you want to experiment with it, but I can't give any assurances about its usability at this point.

Tony

P.S.: 23,000 words is better than 15,000, but it is still only a small fraction of the number of words listed in EDICT and JMDict.

Thank you for your help Tony!

Well, this dictionary is collaborative one so it grows every day. I'm sure a lot of french people will appreciate to have this dictionary because it's the most complete one that i have found on the web. I use it almost every day and it's rare when i don't find a word.

I'm currently asking the admin to make an update but i will ask for a monthly package update if possible.

I would like to know exactely the steps i need to do to import correctly the dictionary. What tools do you use?

I'll try to no bother you and do it myself next time ^^

WaKan has a built in routine to import a file in EDICT format. It can be accessed in the Dictionary Manager (second to last command on the Tools menu) via the button labeled "Import from EDICT" near the bottom of the Dictionary Manager window.

Before importing, you will have to change the file from dictionnaire-japonais.com from 8-bit Unicode format to 16-bit Unicode format. Most word processors can do this-- Microsoft Word, for example, if you have it, or OpenOffice.

There is a bug in the routine which has never been corrected which causes it to miss several dozen entries at the end of the file. The workaround for this is to add 60 or so "comment lines" to the end of a file, a "comment line" being any line which begins with the character #.

Give it a try. If you need step-by-step instructions, I have written them out several times somewhere in this forum, and will try to find them for you.

Hello Tony-san,

and thanks for your commitment to help the french community.

MrAurelien -> This collaborative dictionnary's translation project seems to be really interesting (je suis français et traducteur moi-même ^_-). Can you give me a link so that i can visit the website and broadcast it around ? As i'm already translating the KanjiDic file missing french translations on my own, i think i won't be able to help by myself, but some of my friends should.

Thank you very much to both of you for your work !

Here it is:
www.dictionnaire-japonais.com

C'est bon de savoir que tu es traducteur.... Tu donnes des cours du soir sur msn aussi ? Laughing
冗談ですね

Well i think the best is to complete this collaborative dictionary instead of working alone on your side. This dictionary is very amazing and it's very simple to contribute. You do not need to register, just fill a form.
Well the words are checked by the admin so, no bad joke please Wink
