Here are some more fonts I found, note that I haven't gone through them (I only downloaded them and gave some a quick glance, most look handwritten and a few are missing kanji and so on). You guys are welcome to any of them, just don't use download accelerators please, the site should be fast enough to not use them.

Thank you very much for a font collection so huge. I haven't downloaded all the fonts yet. Most of the fonts are handwritten (probably by young people, they're way different from how adult Japanese write by hand), but several printed style (CyberCJK) or kaisho (HGRSKP - HGSekaiShotai Pro) can also be found there.
Anybody else who has any free nice font for us to share, please follow Odyn's efforts...

To all those that want these files and can't connect to my site:
The host is down, and will be for 2 months. As soon as it is fixed everything should be back up. I'll bump the thread when everything is back to normal.

Everyone,
I recently found some very nice fonts for download from Epson's Japanese website:
http://www.i-love-epson.co.jp/download2/list/LP-9200SX.html
Go to the last Download button in the table - you'll be downloading a 15.8Mb self-extracting archive of 8 fonts, all of very high quality. I noticed them when I was getting print drivers for my office printers. There are also some really nice fonts on the driver CD for our Ricoh office printer, so I'll try to find a link for the archive on the web...

Hello ndt.
Thanks for the fonts.
Can you use them in the computer? I am having problems. I have a Windows 2000 with Word 2000. I can use all the kanji fonts like Mincho, and other calligraphy fonts, but I cannot use these fonts...
In Word, in the font list there are some new fonts with no name. I suppose there are the Epson fonts. In the Font list of the configuration panel, I can see the names with EPSON<somekanjis>B, but not it word.
In Wakan (and JWPce) I can select the fonts, but then, all the kanjis are just boxes, so I cannot use them... I don't know if there is any trick.
Thanks! |

ncc1701,
I just extracted them into a folder, then copied them into the Fonts folder of my Win2000 system, and they work fine.
I must admit, I have 'Japanified' my PC a little, so that may be the issue... In the Windows Regional options, under the General tab, I have my locale set to English (Australia), but my Default language setting set to Japanese. I highly recommend doing this, as it permits the correct display of Japanese text in 3rd-party applications like print drivers for Japanese peripherals, and all the Japanese subject lines and contact names in Outlook Express are displayed correctly too. It's a lot better than looking at '??????' for all your Japanese contact names, and mojibake for the print driver... By setting this to Japanese, you also see the Japanese names for Fonts appear correctly from within MS Office, and can be used in many other (unicode) applications.
Unfortunately Wakan doesn't show the names correctly in the Fonts pick-list, but you can still choose them and use them correctly - just look at the little preview window in the Font dialogue to see which font is which.
Hope this helps,
- Nigel |

Hello.
Thanks for the advice, but would prefer to mantain an Spanish windows. I'll try to change it to japanese to see if the problems are solved.
In any case, Wakan should be able to use the new fonts, but it isn't. The sample text in the font selection window are boxes, and if I click on OK, then all the kanjis in the kanji grid or the editor are boxes...
Well, I'll continue trying.
Thanks. |

Well, I have tried to "japanize" my Windows and you're right, then I can see the japanese fontnames in Word (but not in Wakan, curious), and there are no more blocks instead of text in Word when selecting the Epson fonts.
Also, when windows is japanese, the fonts Mincho and Gothic are missing! so I have to select another kanji font in wakan.
But the main problem is that Spanish and Japanese are not fully compatible together, and I need more the Spanish than the Epson fonts, so they will have to wait (but support for them in Wakan would be nice).
Best regards. |

ncc1701,
I don't have any experience with Spanish Windows, I'm afraid - though I imagine Spanish can be displayed using only single-byte fonts. I'm a little surprised that you're having this trouble actually - I wouldn't have thought the Spanish version of Windows was so different to the English version. When I say I 'Japanified' my Windows, it's still a fully English system, with all applications and web pages displaying in English correctly. It's only when some Japanese text appears in an email, or a Japanese program is installed that I notice the correct display of the characters, as opposed to the mojibake I had before.
By the way, MS Mincho and MS Gothic don't actually disappear - in fact the display of their names changes to MS ゴシック and MS 明朝, as they would appear on Japanese Windows. Wakan doesn't display these names correctly in the font pick-list, but they're still there...
Anyway, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I imagine it is a little more important to have your Spanish side of Windows working correctly!

The fonts are wonderful (mainly the gyousho font) - but I admit they don't work in my Czech-locale Wakan either. Which is going to force me to fix this error, because now it is really serious

I am not sure but I think he is having the same problem as what exists with french. This has nothing to do with single byte or not. Or actually it does, those languages can be displayed with single byte but not with ascii you need some ansi characters (contained in iso-latin) that are not ascii. English is quite simpler and it doesn't need a full byte to display (only the 7 bits ascii set).
When a single byte character with the high bit is found (typical of accented characters) then when a japanese setting is used the software assumes that it is the start of a double byte character.
Then you see some kanji in the middle of your french or spanish sentence.

The resolution double-byte-font-name problem has been unfortunately postponed... it was not as easy as I have thought...

Filip, Everyone,
Firstly, I'd just like to say thanks for introducing a whole bunch of goodies into the upcoming v1.65 . Great stuff, I particularly like the (completely unexpected) half-width text feature!
I've just noticed that the abovementioned Epson fonts work beautifully with this new 'half-width ASCII' feature - they really do look great. One of them - ' EPSON 正楷書体M ' - has exactly the same kanji characters as my beloved ' HG正楷書体-PRO ', but with perfectly proportioned half-width ascii characters (as do all of them).
I remember trying these fonts earlier, but the slim ascii characters didn't look so great for reading through mixed-language emails with the previously fully-spaced character blocks, so I stuck with HG正楷書体-PRO, but now...
Enjoy. Again!
