Hello all,

and thanks to take a while and read me. I looked over the whole web before to decide to post here. I wish somebody will be able to help me.

So as a french guy, i wanted to install the JMdict file to have my Wakan's dictionnary displayed in french. I think i tried all ways to do it now :

- to open it using Wakan's dictionnary manager ;
- to paste the original file in Wakan's directory then click the update dictionnaries button in Wakan's dictionnary manager ;
- to convert with uniconv then edit the file with comment lines ;
- to rename the original file with the .dic extension ;
- to open the original file with JWPce to convert it to another format ;
- and so goes on...

Even tried to cross those methods. Actually i spent the whole day without finding any solution. This damn original JMdict file has no extension, and a .dic version doesn't seems to exist on the internet (Am i the only one trying to do that ?!).

Anyways, if anybody could help me, one way or another to convert the file, or providing me a Wakan compatible version of the file, it'd be very kind ! Thank you for reading for the time you took to read me.

Bests

Barbiche,

The .dic files used by WaKan are in a special format understood only by WaKan. You will not find files elsewhere that can be used as .dic files with WaKan, and renaming a file in some other format will not work.

The built-in converter only understands EDICT format, which was the predecessor to the current JMDict format. It simply does not know how to read the JMDict file, which is an XML file. EDICT format is described in many threads in this forum. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to extract the French information from JMDict and to put it in EDICT format; someone would have to write a program to do this, as it would take forever by hand.

It has been over a year now since the last new version of WaKan was posted, so there is no telling if and when another version might be made available. I think a JMDict import mechanism should be a high priority for the next version, but I have no control over this.

Sorry to give you such a disappointing answer, but I figure it is better than no answer at all.

Hi,

And thank you for your reply. At least i won't spend more time trying to add JMdict to Wakan XD
This is uncredible that some wise developer didn't make a convert tool yet ! Anyway, i'm one of those english lovers (i works as a volunteer translator for many years).

Wakan is still the best Japanese word processor ever !

Veuillez me pardonner pour ne pas avoir écrit en français. Mais comme vous voyez, je ne parle pas bien le français.

Maybe there's a utility program at Jim Breen's page for converting JMDict into an EDICT-formatted file with a given choice of language?

Sentiments distinguées,
tony

P.S.: By the way, "incroyable" = "incredible." Smile
